Using Citrus to generate correct legal citations to rules of evidence and procedure and to court rules is as easy as typing your legal brief and using the F2 key to mark your citations as you go.  The example below will show you how to cite to court rules, including local court rules.  Follow this link to see how to cite to state and federal rules of evidence and procedure.

Court Rules

Citrus recognizes federal court rules, including local rules.

Supreme Court clerks cannot practice as attorneys while they are clerks. Sup ct r 7.

If you did not use F2 to tag the citation while entering it, highlight "Sup ct r 7" and press F2.  Citrus will automatically generate the following citation:

Supreme Court clerks cannot practice as attorneys while they are clerks. Sup. Ct. R. 7.

Although the Bluebook does not include specific guidance on citing to local rules, Citrus supports the common practice of simply tagging a citation to a local rule of court with a lower case 'local' as shown below:

Parties may file submissions on CD-ROM. F2 1st Cir. local rule 32.1. F2

Citrus will format the citation to the local rule in accordance with prevailing practice:

Parties may file submissions on CD-ROM. 1st Cir. local R. 32.1.

Use Id. to repeat a citation to the same local rule:

Parties may file submissions on CD-ROM. 1st Cir. local R. 32.1. The requirements for filing a brief on CD-ROM are simple. F2 id. F2

Citrus will generate a standard Id. citation:

Parties may file submissions on CD-ROM. 1st Cir. local R. 32.1. The requirements for filing a brief on CD-ROM are simple. Id.

To cite to another local rule from the same circuit, use an Id. cite and remember to include the word 'local' in the cite as shown below.  If you omit the word 'local', it will be treated as a citation to the non-local rules.

Parties may file submissions on CD-ROM. 1st Cir. local R. 32.1. The requirements for filing a brief on CD-ROM are simple. Id. A CD-ROM filing need not be made at the same time as a paper filing of the same material. F2 id local r 32.1(c). F2

Citrus will generate a correct qualified Id. citation:

Parties may file submissions on CD-ROM. F2 1st Cir. local R. 32.1. The requirements for filing a brief on CD-ROM are simple. Id. A CD-ROM filing need not be made at the same time as a paper filing of the same material. Id. local R. 32.1(c).

You may use Citrus to cite to repealed rules:

Although no longer required, it would have been permitted at the time. Sup ct r 8 306us690 1939 repealed 1954.

When you use F2 to tag the citation, Citrus will automatically generate the following citation in Bluebook format:

Although no longer required, it would have been permitted at the time. Sup. Ct. R. 8, 306 U.S. 690 (1939) (repealed 1954).
